Meet Our Dentists

Dr. Ryan Reid

Dr. Ryan Reid Dr. Ryan Reid grew up in University Place, WA and is a proud alumni of Curtis High School. He also graduated from the University of Washington where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Economics. He then went on to attend Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine in Pomona, California where he graduated #4 in his class and earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Dr. Reid was selected to the Dean's List all 4 years of dental school, served as his class’s Ethics Chair, and upon graduation was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.

Giving back to his community has always been a priority for Dr. Reid. He has volunteered with programs such as Special Olympics, Give Kids a Smile, the First5 LA Community Health Initiative, the Meet Each Need with Dignity Dental Clinic, the San Gabriel Valley Foundation for Dental Health, and the South Sound Free Dental Day.

Dr. Reid is thrilled to be practicing in his hometown and enjoying all that the Northwest has to offer.  He is, of course, a huge Husky and Seahawks fan, and enjoys all things outdoors. He married his wonderful wife Jenny in 2011, and they keep busy raising their 2 children, Allison and Jacob. Dr. Reid believes that great dental care begins with compassion, honesty, and by listening to the needs of each patient.

Dr. Melanie Jenkins

Dr. Melanie Jenkins
Dr. Melanie Jenkins grew up in University Place, WA where she discovered at a young age that dentistry is her passion. Her main draw to dentistry came from her desire to help people. At a very young age, she discovered that dentistry could not only get patients out of pain, but could also drastically improve patients’ self-confidence and have a lasting impact on their lives. She attended Curtis High School where she graduated with honors and was very involved with sports including Softball, Swim team, and Varsity Cheerleading. During this time, she was an active member of ASB, Key Club, and worked with Habitat for Humanity and her church to serve the underprivileged in Tijuana, Mexico.

After high school, Dr. Jenkins pursued a degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Washington. While at the University of Washington, she was an active member of multiple clubs including Global Medical Brigades where she traveled to Panama to help provide medical and dental care to the indigenous Emberá community.

While earning her Doctor of Dental Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA, Dr. Jenkins held many leadership roles and made the Dean’s list. She was her Class Treasurer all four years, held leadership roles in ASDA, was president of the Cosmetic Dentistry Interest Group, and founded her school’s chapter of The Academy for Sports Dentistry. She was also an active member of the American Student Dental Association, American Association of Women Dentists, Academy of General Dentistry, California Dental Association, and American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Jenkins enjoys challenging herself with continuing education courses to learn updated techniques in general dentistry, dental surgery, and cosmetic dentistry.

In her free time, Dr. Jenkins enjoys exploring the outdoors, baking, and spending quality time with her husband, family, friends, and pets.

Dr. Jenkins is extremely excited to be practicing in her hometown and honored to be treating the community she grew up in. She believes in creating individualized treatment plans for each patient tailored to their specific needs and treating each patient with honesty, respect, and a gentle touch.

Dr. Judy Yuan

Dr. Judy Yuan Dr. Yuan grew up in the state of Michigan after immigrating from China at the age of 7. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience from The University of Michigan, and is proud to have attended the #1 Dental School in America,

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry. For her record of excellence in patient-centered care and education, she became one of five recipients of the 2016 Michigan Periodontal Alumni Association Award. She received multiple "Make a Difference" awards because of her ability to create trust and friendship with her patients. Because she enjoys caring for people of all demographics, Dr. Yuan participated in multiple donated dental care days, and spent a third of her last year caring for patients at community dental clinics across the state of Michigan.

Her dedication to serving her community is also evident in her professional involvements. She travelled with the American Student Dental Association to Lansing, MI and Washington D.C. to advocate for patients’ access to oral care. She also enjoys mentoring younger students and served for two years on the Executive Board of Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity’s Chi Chapter. She was awarded the 2015 ASDA National Leadership Conference Scholarship.

Dr. Yuan is bilingual, with full fluency in Mandarin and her hometown Sichuan dialect. She spends her free time managing her college admissions consulting business and enjoys photography, travel, and piano performance. She looks forward to exploring the Washington outdoors with her rescue mutt Pepper!

Dr. Michael Baldwin

Dr. Michael Baldwin Dr. Baldwin received his clinical training at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He continues to study at the UW, working on an advanced PhD degree in Oral Biology, with the goal of improving his knowledge about preventing and treating dental disease. Dr. Baldwin strives to provide his patients with comfortable and quality dental care. He is compassionate, honest, and takes the time to listen to his patients, making sure he understands their needs and desires.

Michael grew up in University Place and graduated from Curtis Senior High School. After high school, he served a two year mission for his church in Chile. Upon returning home from his mission, he attended Brigham Young University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and with University Honors, earning a BS degree in business management with an emphasis in entrepreneurship and a minor in Spanish.

After graduating from BYU, Dr. Baldwin was admitted into the highly competitive dual DDS/PhD program at the UW. In conjunction with his clinical training, Dr. Baldwin has taken additional coursework investigating the biological processes of dental disease and has conducted extensive research, receiving national and international recognition for his work. For his academic excellence, Dr. Baldwin has received the Psi Omega Scholarship, Dr. Tony Michael Ponti Memorial Scholarship, Academic Careers in Oral Health Fellowship, ARCS Foundation Fellowship, and International Association for Dental Research Craniofacial Biology Award.

Dr. Baldwin enjoys serving in the community and helping those in need, and has done this in several ways. At the early age of 13, he organized the building of a playground in the Curran Apple Orchard in University Place, saving the city thousands of dollars. For his efforts, he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Scouting. During his clinical training at the UW, Dr. Baldwin served as a representative of the American Dental Education Association and provided free dental care to children through the organizations Give Kids a Smile and Husky Smiles. As a dentist, Dr. Baldwin provides free dental care in the community through Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission and South Sound Free Dental Day. He also helps teach anatomy to first year dental students at the UW.

When not practicing dentistry, Dr. Baldwin enjoys sports, the outdoors, serving in his church, and spending time with his family.

Dr. Baldwin is excited to be a part of the Light Dental Studios team, and looks forward to developing a relationship with his patients and giving them the highest quality of care with a light, gentle touch.

Dr. Urvi Ruparelia

Dr. Urvi R Dr. Urvi Ruparelia obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She graduated as one of the top students in her class and was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society upon graduation. As an active participant in dental research, Dr. Ruparelia was one of forty-two medical, dental and veterinary students selected yearly to receive biomedical research training as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) National Institutions of Health (NIH) Research Scholar.

Upon presenting her research completed at NIH during her year away from dental school, she was the 1st place recipient of the 2011 American Association of Dental Research Hatton Award. Her research experiences have instilled a deep appreciation for the fact that oral health plays an integral and interactive role in overall health. During her time in Boston, Dr. Ruparelia volunteered in the community by providing dental care to homeless, at-risk youth and by educating children and families about oral health prevention.

Dr. Ruparelia grew up just outside Atlanta, GA and recieved a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. After graduating with the honor of Magna Cum Laude, she worked at a world-renowned multispeciality dental practice in Atlanta, GA which confirmed her desire to practice dentistry.

Dr. Ruparelia continued her education by receiving advanced postgraduate training at the University of Washington General Practice Residency program, where she provided care to various patient populations including pediatric, adult, geriatric, medically compromised and special needs patients.

In her free time, Dr. Ruparelia loves seeing all that the Northwest has to offer, including rock climbing, snow sports, and supporting Seattle's sports teams! She enjoys spending time with her family and her puppy at home.

Dr. Ruparelia strives to provide dental care that is centered around the patient's needs and desires and helps each patient reach optimum oral health. She is proud to be a part of the Light Dental Studios team and is looking forward to building relationships with patients both old and new!

Dr. Mark Schlam


Dr. Mark Schlam Dr. Schlam feels lucky to be a part of the Light Dental Studios team. He is from Lexington, MA and completed his undergraduate studies at Yale University where he majored in History of Science/History of Medicine and was a 4-year letterman on the varsity lacrosse team. Prior to starting his dental training, Dr. Schlam worked as an EMT and scholastic tutor in San Diego, CA.

Dr. Schlam obtained his doctorate from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where he was awarded a Health Professions Scholarship from the United States Army. In dental school, he served as an academic tutor, teaching assistant, and BLS instructor. At Tufts, Dr. Schlam also pursued his passions of medicine and surgery and was honored with the H. Chris Doku Award, Distinguished Professor Scholarship for Oral Surgery, and The Robert E. O’Neil, D51, Prize in Oral Surgery. Dr. Schlam was selected to participate on a mission trip, where he traveled to rural regions of the Dominican Republic and provided surgical services to the local communities.

After dental school, Dr. Schlam became an active-duty Army officer and completed a 4-year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, NC. Dr. Schlam trained extensively in facial reconstruction and dental implant therapy, anesthesia, orthognathic surgery, cosmetic surgery, and trauma. He has a special interest in full arch rehabilitation and enjoys working closely with his prosthodontic and restorative colleagues.

Dr. Schlam places patient safety and comfort as his top priorities and strives to ensure a positive experience for all surgical patients at Light Dental Studios. He is excited to add to the tradition of excellence currently established by the growing team and looks forward to serving the community of the south Puget Sound and beyond.

In his free time, Dr. Schlam enjoys exploring Washington with his wife and baby daughter, finding new places to surf, mountain bike, and race triathlons.

Dr. Christopher Brown


Dr. Christopher Brown Dr. Christopher Bao Brown completed his undergraduate education at Duke University where he played varsity tennis and afterward played professional tennis on the ATP circuit. The same drive and commitment to excellence he cultivated as a tennis player he applies to his oral surgery practice. Dr. Brown received his dental degree from the world’s first dental school, the University of Maryland, graduating magna cum laude and being recognized for his academic achievements in oral surgery and anatomy. He then completed a rigorous one-year surgical internship at the University of Maryland, including working at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He went on to the University of Washington to complete his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery training. While in Seattle, he received extensive training in the broad scope of oral & maxillofacial surgery.

Dr. Brown is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Brown’s main clinical interests include wisdom teeth extractions, dental implants, bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, and sedation services. When he is not delivering optimal service and care to his patients, he enjoys playing sports and spending time with his wife Autumn and daughter Lily.
