Dr William A (Andy) Gilbert

After graduating with his Bachelor’s degree from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO, Dr Gilbert ran a restaurant for 6 years. In 1991, he enlisted in the Army as a Pharmacy Technician, serving for 6 years before pursuing his degree in Dentistry. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in 2004 at the age of 40, earning the CWRU Periodontics Award. He rejoined the military, attending the US Army Advanced Education in Periodontics Program, graduating in 2008. He earned his Board Certification in 2009.

In the Army, Dr Gilbert serving duty assignments all over the US, to include Alaska and Hawaii, and in Korea, and finishing here Washington. He held multiple positions culminating as Deputy Commander for 2 Dental Units, including here at JBLM. He also taught periodontics for 8 years at the 3 of Army’s General Dentistry residency programs earning the Mentor of the Year award 5 times. He retired in 2025 after 32 years of service, attaining the rank of COL.

Periodontics, teaching, and taking care of patients are Dr Gilbert’s passions. He focuses on education to ensure patients understand the why behind the treatment options and recommendations and the ways dental health can improve overall health. He has emphasized working with patients with dental anxiety with significant success. Having had significant dental work himself, Dr Gilbert is kind and empathetic to his patients to help them have the best experience possible.

Dr Gilbert has been married to his better-half, Lucy, for 34 years and they are extremely proud of their 3 adult children, Bailey, Hunter, and Gale, who all live at home on their ‘non-working’ farm in Rainier. Dr Gilbert enjoys endurance sports including triathlons and now long-distance cycling. He also enjoys doing yoga and Pilates with his 2 older daughters. The Gilbert’s have several garden and flower beds, 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 goats, 16 chickens and a rooster named Travis. They hope to have a couple of mules and a donkey.

Dr Gilbert is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Periodontology, and the American Board of Periodontology.
